Angel Gomes, a former star player for Manchester United, needed medical care after taking a “violent blow to the head” while playing for Lille.

The game, which was played at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, was tarnished early on by a disturbing incident involving Gomes, a crucial player for Lille since signing from Boavista in 2021, and Amadou Kone of Stade de Reims. Due to a serious head injury sustained in the incident, match officials and medical personnel acted quickly.

After Kone’s tackle was judged risky, he was immediately taken out of the game. As rescue personnel raced onto the pitch to tend to Gomes’ injuries, it became clear how serious the situation was. Across the stadium, there was an overwhelming display of support for him as he lay on the pitch receiving medical attention. The players from Lille surrounded their injured comrade in a protective circle, while the supporters of Lille and Reims came together in a moving show of support. The fans created an emotional environment as they screamed Gomes’ name for ten minutes, hoping for his recovery.

WHAT MAN UTD & LILLE SAID
Lille subsequently reported that Gomes is making a full recovery at the hospital.

“Angel Gomes was taken to the hospital after regaining consciousness. “Everyone’s thoughts are with him,” the official club handle tweeted.

United, Gomes’ previous team, too responded with emotion.

“Sending love and strength to @AGomes_47, who was involved in a collision while playing for Lille and is currently in the hospital.” The Red Devils wrote, “Angel, you’re in our thoughts.”

Due to the seriousness of Gomes’ injury, the game was significantly disrupted, and the referee called an unprecedented 34 minutes of extra time during the first half.

Hakon Arnar Haraldsson took Gomes’s position as the play proceeded in a muted setting. In the thirty minutes of extra time, Lille captain Bafode Diakite scored a goal and celebrated by donning Gomes’ shirt in honour of the player.
