Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana has made AFCON U-turn

Andre Onana, the goalkeeper for Manchester United, is reportedly planning to change his mind about attending the Africa Cup of Nations.

Although Andre Onana was picked for Cameroon’s 27-man tournament, he hasn’t yet reunited with his teammates. On Monday night, he played in United’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Wigan Athletic.

He agreed with Cameroonian authorities to stay until January 14 in order to play in the Premier League against Spurs prior to making his break.

Onana was optimistic that despite the short turnaround, he would play in both of Cameroon’s group stage matches against Guinea on January 15.

However, following discussions between United and the Cameroon FA, iNews believes he is probably going to miss the opening game.

There is a perception that Onana won’t make it to the Ivory Coast in time, and as a result, she might not be picked.

There is still a chance, it is also stated, that Onana does not even play a minute for Cameroon during the competition.

After a fallout with manager Rigobert Song, the former Inter Milan player had announced his retirement from international competition. However, it has been suggested that the president of Cameroon put pressure on him to reconsider in August.

If Cameroon loses to United in the group stage, he might not miss a club match because United won’t play again until January 27.

Cameroon, Guinea, Senegal, and the Gambia are all in Group C.

Onana reportedly refused to travel to the competition out of concern that Altay Bayindir, the backup goalie, would overtake him as the starting option in the net.

Although Bayindir joined from Fenerbahce in the summer for £4.3 million, he has not yet made his debut for United.

With 29 appearances, Onana has participated in every minute of every game across all competitions.
