BID MADE: Arsenal intends to activate the superstar’s release clause in order to finalise the signing of this fantastic winger; personal terms are the sole sticking point.

Reputable reporter David Ornstein claims that Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, is still a huge fan of Nico Williams, the winger for Athletic Bilbao.

The Gunners are expected to finalise the signing of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino in the next few days, adding David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori to their roster.

Speaking on Duncan Castles’ podcast, Ornstein said that Arteta and Arsenal both think highly of Williams and that Arsenal is looking into signing a new winger.

The Gunners, though, have a lot of opposition. His enormous salary and release clause, which must be paid in full to get his signature, provide another obstacle.

“Nico Williams is the one that Mikel Arteta and those involved at Arsenal really like, but he’s the centre of attention for everybody,” he stated. The issue is that he currently earns an extremely high salary, which would only rise if he were to join a league like the Premier League, and his contract has a release clause that would require full payment. It seems he will be sticking around.

significant transfer coup
Williams has made a name for himself in La Liga as one of the top wingers. With 9 goals and 18 assists in all competitions, he was outstanding for Bilbao in the previous campaign. The Spaniard continued to shine at the European Championship in Germany, contributing three goals, one of which came against England in the championship match.

Given that he can play both the right and left side of the attack with ease, the 22-year-old, who is just about to reach the pinnacle of his playing career, would be a great addition to the Arsenal. The north London giants will face challenges in completing a deal, though, given his £49 million release clause.

Williams was been given the No. 10 shirt by Bilbao, and until a club activates his release clause, they don’t have any plans to let him go before the transfer deadline. Williams’s decision to transfer may also need to be persuaded by Arteta, and this may depend on regular playing time from the starting lineup.

The Gunners will also need to make him their best paid player. He currently makes £171,001 per week, but he could ask for over £300,000 a week to sign. The Gunners are investing a significant amount of money, but it might be beneficial if they want to snap their two-decade league title drought.
