As NFL training camps approach, the Detroit Lions find themselves in a strong position heading into the 2025 season.
With high expectations and a roster full of young talent, the Lions are viewed as legitimate contenders in the NFC. However, recent reports suggest that Detroit may not be done building just yet — and some analysts are urging the team to make a major late offseason move.
NFL insiders believe the Lions could benefit from adding another veteran presence, particularly on the defensive side of the ball. While Detroit’s offense is considered one of the most explosive in the league, questions remain about the consistency of their secondary and depth at edge rusher.
One name that continues to be linked to the Lions is veteran pass rusher Chandler Jones. Although past his prime, Jones could bring leadership and playoff experience to a young locker room. Another option could be former All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who remains a free agent. Adding either player would signal that Detroit is going all-in for a Super Bowl run.
“They’re close — very close,” said one NFC executive. “One more impact player on defense could be the difference between a playoff win and a Super Bowl appearance.”
The Lions’ front office, led by GM Brad Holmes, has shown patience in its roster-building strategy. But with other NFC powerhouses like the 49ers, Cowboys, and Eagles also loading up, Detroit may need to make a bold move to keep pace.
On the offensive side, some fans have floated the idea of signing a veteran wide receiver to provide depth behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. Injuries happen, and a proven pass-catcher could serve as insurance in a long season.
With a roster built around youth and rising stars, the Lions have a chance to make 2025 special. But the window in the NFL can close quickly. If the right veteran becomes available, Detroit may be wise to act — even if it’s late in the offseason.
