After disclosing his final transfer intention, Mikel Arteta gave his blessing to Gabriel Jesus’ desire to stay at Arsenal and compete for a spot in the first squad.
With injury problems, Kai Havertz’s £65 million arrival, and rumoured big-money bids from Saudi Arabia, it was believed that Jesus’ two-year stay in north London would come to an end this summer.
But the 27-year-old reportedly entered this season determined to compete for first-team time under Arteta, and it appears that his perseverance has paid off.
Jesus was relied upon to see out the Gunners’ 2-0 home victory over Gary O’Neil’s Wolves on opening day. Following the game, it was disclosed that the Brazilian is a part of Arteta’s title-challenging ambitions, with the acquisition of a new striker apparently off the table.
Arsenal’s striker is prepared to battle for a spot in the first squad at the Emirates, according to The Sun, regardless of reported £60 million bids from Saudi Pro League teams.
After the team’s first victory, his manager has now rewarded such ambition by saying that he is now satisfied with his forward choices and that he would now concentrate on developing and having faith in current players like Jesus.
Following a Wolves victory in which preferred forward Havertz scored the game’s first goal, Arteta told talkSPORT, “I have faith in [Havertz], we have faith in [Gabriel Jesus], Leandro [Trossard] has played in that position.”
We therefore possess a variety of talents, and the greatest thing we can do is put our faith in our players and work to help them grow. What we concentrate on is how good and willing they are.
Jesus was praised by his boss earlier for his personal growth after making an impression on the team’s preseason tour of the United States, particularly in a 2-1 victory over Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United.
Arteta complimented Jesus after he scored the equaliser against United in the first half, saying, “He looks really good.” “He seemed quite knowledgeable. Over the summer, he made a lot of changes.
“He is back to his best self. Other things can be built upon after you have that baseline, but without it, you don’t have a player. To get the most out of him, he must be in that state. He is now aware of that. And once again, I’m quite pleased with what he demonstrated today.
