Newcastle United vs. Liverpool: Team news
On New Year’s Day, Liverpool will play Newcastle United at Anfield, and Alexis Mac Allister might be available.
The Argentina international has not played since the team’s victory over Sheffield United on December 6. However, he participated in training on Friday, so he could be considered for a spot in Jürgen Klopp’s lineup when the Magpies visit.
Nevertheless, Klopp is missing several other key players because of injuries; during his pregame press conference, the manager disclosed that Andy Robertson’s recovery from shoulder surgery is still some distance off.
The manager remarked, “Robbo still needs more range in his shoulder. It was obviously a major surgery.” Even now, [he is] nowhere near team training or anything like that.
“[He] is able to perform nearly all tasks without using his arm correctly, which is clearly beneficial but also indicates that there is still much work to be done. I believe that throughout the entire month of January, he must get closer and closer.
Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara, who have both missed the majority of the season thus far, were also given an update on their health by Klopp.
He predicted that Thiago would participate in team training at some point in January. “When you ask Stefan how he feels, he replies, ‘good.'” Could you practice? He could, indeed. We simply need to exercise common sense. That’s the reality.
“Thiago is also in a great place right now, but we need to be careful not to use him too soon. The hip issue in and around that region is also merely a long-term issue.
“There were undoubtedly days when he could have trained with ease, but our focus is on how he can be back then in the long run.”
Klopp is also without Joel Matip due to an ACL rupture, Ben Doak (knee) and Kostas Tsimikas (broken collarbone) from the draw with Arsenal.
On Monday night, Alisson Becker can discuss reaching the historic 250 Liverpool appearances.
Comparing teams in English Premier League
For Newcastle, head coach Eddie Howe is evaluating captain Jamaal Lascelles ahead of the trip to Anfield because he was not present for Nottingham Forest’s Boxing Day loss. Howe stated, “We don’t think it’s serious and we hope he’ll be back fairly soon.”
However, eight key Magpies are absent from the Premier League match on Merseyside.
Due to a shoulder injury, Nick Pope is not available. Harvey Barnes and Joe Willock are also not available due to setbacks in their recuperations from Achilles and foot injuries, respectively. Matt Targett, Elliott Anderson, Jacob Murphy, and former Liverpool defender Javier Manquillo are also out.Sandro Tonali has been put on leave.
In anticipation of the match, Howe stated on Friday: “We’ve definitely had some painful games against Liverpool; the match at Anfield last season was especially difficult for us. It wasn’t any easier this season.
“I believe that our excellent performance and competitiveness in both games allowed Liverpool to have a great game.”
“In my opinion, we must perform at a nearly flawless level in this game. This seems like a really difficult game for us. They’re a really good team that consistently performs well, especially at home.
Therefore, our challenge is to rediscover our best form and to have extremely strong mental fortitude.
